Asgdgdhshd.
The only successful way to do a Morrisson re read is if we all got fucked up at the same time and I dont mean just a joint.

Decimation: The Day After #01 Issue starts with the Blob, after a night of partying, finding out he has lost his powers. The first thing he does is ask a cop to put him out of his misery. The use of Dukes is so brilliant here bc he was always characterized by his cockiness and his pride in his powers and appearance and losing that to him is the same as a death sentence. That's the Blob we're talking abt and thats just two pages of story.
Following that, the issue explores the reactions of various factions to the events of M Day, checking up on characters from every series going on at the moment. Bishop vows to set things right (and has a cute team up with Charlotte Jones <3), Madrox is too busy larping as Sherlock Holmes to be any use, Kitty thinks mutants are = egyptians who persecuted Moses and his people, Rachel makes things abt her future again and Cyclops is this close to calling Wanda a bitch. It could have been disjointed since it references so many plot lines and events but it feels more like looking at one event from a multitude of perspectives and its gratifying. Everyone's characterization is on point and the interactions between various characters ring true, be it Colossus musing abt the reason for his return or Lorna trying to comfort Iceman (did Lorna not figure she had lost her powers right away? Or was she hiding it from everyone else idr).
One aspect that keeps coming up and probably my favorite element is how the mutant identity or mutant culture or whatever is handled. Maybe it was present before Morrisson and I didnt pay attention to it but he was definitely the one bringing it to the forefront. I feel like, often times, because mutants are used as a metaphor for minority groups while pretty much always having been written by ppl pertaining to groups in position of powers, they're treated the way of 'oh they're just regular ppl, they just want the same thing as US normal ppl' which is condescending and annoying and this issue avoids that trap. Blob WANTS to be big as a truck. That lil girl mom LOVED that her daughter could turn music into light (did Longshot knock Ali up and she gave it away?).
Finally I loved how nuanced the world depicted by CC was. Yes things have never been so dire, but for every O.N.E director plotting to put mutants in camps, there's a Val Cooper. For every Sapien League terrorist, there's a volunteer medic from the red cross putting his life on the line. And then even amongst these guys you've got some racist pieces of shit bc nothing is black and white. It's a complex tale. I can't wait to see how Marvel is gonna fuck this up.
This is rlly not very articulate okay I havent made a review in months or maybe years and I just beat the Hoenn pokemon league so im a little distracted atm.

What if I just start live-posting in this thread as I read random issues of Morrison's New X-Men?

In lieu of a "review" for Decimation: The Day After #1, I'm going to do what I typically do on Twitter when I watch/play/read something: write down whatever random thoughts pop into my head as I go along. I haven't read Nenobi's post prior to this. Also, my impressions are overall negative, so word of warning. {Spoiler}First page immediately makes me think of that comic panel that had She-Hulk and Juggernaut in bed together.
Blob wanting to commit suicide seems... stupid. Really stupid. And like it wouldn't fit someone who was undoubtedly mocked for his appearance all his life. It's not like his condition hurts, otherwise he would have expositioned it hurting before he realized what happened to him. Just feels like the writing threw away common sense to try to play up drama.
"Now they're working together with... FEMA" Haven't the mutants suffered enough?
Page with the "I used to be a mutant" kid and others: who let Frank Miller into this comic?
"Something's happening in Paris!" It's... THE HAPPENING! *whoosh*
Why are literally all the women drawn like pinup models cursed with doing random poses when they make the least sense? First the cop holding herself as a van slams into the building, now Emma looking all pouty as she talks. On that note, I "like" how Cyclops is speaking to everyone like they're idiots with no crisis experience, and Emma plays role of woman by his side as he gets to do all the leading.
It's pretty convenient that the three X-Factor characters happen to keep their powers.
The team pictures on the wall are a nice touch. Too bad they skip straight from O5 to Giant-Size.
The issue only starts to actually get better at the very end when Wolverine and Colossus face the Sapien League.
All in all, I feel like I wasted a lot of time by reading this. The way women are treated in this especially sucks. Throughout the entire book, they're repeatedly talked down to or presented as if they exist as emotional objects - either damsels to save/comfort or backdoor therapists. You don't see that in Blob's or Quicksilver's bits. If the rest is like this, or this is the best the period has to offer, I'm not sure I'll be able to stand reading more.
P.S. - I'm not knocking anyone liking this of course. These are simply my views.

Decimation: House of M: The Day After #1- Opening with Blob's deformation is a great and terrifying moodsetter - Is anyone in the X-Universe nastier than Trish Tilby - An X-Corp building being blown up is a bit too much of an on the nose metaphor for Marvel's thoughts on Morrison's run - Havok seems very agitated here, considering he was fine with M-Day in Uncanny Avengers - Sunspot has never looked this white (unless that's an other Robert idk) - The comic is very good at depicting the chaos following this destabilizing event. Compare it to the gee shucks tone of the Terrigenocide - Is this the only most overtly religious Kitty's ever been? - Marvel was a lot more willing to show off what a piece of trash Bush is than with Trump - I should mention that the art in this is very bad - The bug girl scene was great, really shows what a monster Wanda is. Remember how Avengers fans kept insisting she did mutants a favour? - lol remember when Madrox and Scott were on good terms Obi-Wan Nenobi which side are you on?? - It's so weird that only the Astonishing cast knows what Wanda did. Wasn't everyone there and fixed by Layla when she erased mutants? - I forgot this is also when New Excalibur started - One of my developments from this readthrough will be going from "Scemma OTP ^_^" to "fuck this trash couple" - lol Iceman calling Polaris "babe" and lol is this like the third time CC ever wrote Iceman - Storm using this tragedy to spend more time with Black Panther -_- - Feral and Thornn lol - The first time I read this I hollered at the Jubilee scene - "I'll text my URL" - Remember when Colossus asked permission to sketch people instead of just creepily stalking them with his painterly ways? - Colossus has more personality in one CC scene than 15 years of the creeps writing him as the wet blanket - Mammomax - Pretty cool that Logan and Colossus took a detour to put on their suits first - And Colossus ain't even wearing the correct suit - The arrival of the ONE is a good cliffhanger after building it up throughout the issue Best page:

New X-Men #20- I can't believe I only read this delicious torture porn comic once - Is the guy in the opening Stryker it's crazy I don't even remember - Emma's Midriff! (nobody will get this reference ) - Mark Brooks should stick to covers I don't recognize a single character - The art is such a poor fit for the tone of the book - It's pretty fucked up that Kyost depowered the main protags of the previous run - Wither touching Wallflower: ICONIC - So sad that we have to endure Kyost's Emma again - lol Mercury - Rockslide is amazing don't @ me - Kicking Moonstar out never made sense - I guess they needed to get rid of the non-white characters - lol Kyost writing off Claremont's X-23 - As bad as Kyost's X-23 can get I find her infinitely more bearable than the current chipper and sassy iteration - Icarus lies with angels now - In conclusion: Kyost don't handle the immediate chaos quite as well as CC did, but part of that is Brooks' art Best page:

New X-Men #21- Okay so it was William Stryker of course I knew that - Wait, so did his epiphany from "two years ago" take place before his X-Treme X-Men appearances - Tag is my favourite character I hope nothing happens to him - I didn't recognize Pixie without either her helmet or Greg Land porn face - Would you also give up on women after dating Surge? - I miss my Christian theocrats in my X-Men comics - lol Icarus such a moron, of course he's from Kentucky - Remember: Hellion has fans - "This is Laura, my sister." - Emma being so vehemently opposed to X-23 never truly made sense - Scott would've made more sense as the "no assassins in my backyard" guy at this point in his arc - The Danger Cave diversion feels inappropriate and unneccesary - I will admit, the Icarus mystery is a good tease to keep ending on
Best page (I guess):

New X-Men #22- Does this Danger Cave sequence only exist so Kyost can show off their continuity credentials - X-23 being obsessed with Hellion from the starts BUT REMEMBER when Liu turned it around and made it look like Hellion was stalking her all the time? - Dani really is the worst guardian ever tbh how many times has Elixir died and killed over the years - folks, I am not a fan of Kyost's Emma I feel I should throw that out there - lol X-23 and Dust - so much teen horniness - Emma abusing X-23 is something Rosenberg or Soule would write

New X_Men #23- I wish we got more comics that took story beats from Austen's run - My beautiful and alive Fat Loa uwu - Trance uwu uwu - Armor is here to prove Astonishing doesn't take place inbetween the raindrops of continuity - Emma having the students beat each other up is probably her first good character beat - Onyxx makes me miss JAU - Never get tired of seeing that bus leave Arc conclusion: This was a heavily decompressed arc and in my memory the bus explosion happened way at the beginning. This could've all been told in a much shorter amount of issues. I like the way Kyost write the kids, each with a distinctive personality and they have a good rapport with one another. The art by Brooks is just not good throughout and a poor fit. Since this is the end of the arc, the buildup to the Jay Guthrie "mystery" was fairly pointless, aside from getting in a bunch of cliffhangers. Stryker is a fun villain and, at this point, had only been used twice before so he didn't feel tired yet. Best page (of the decade):

P.S. - I'm not knocking anyone liking this of course. These are simply my views. im not starting afight I just want to debate some of those. Blob is actually very self confident and embraced his mutant identity. It helps that he found a sense of belonging in Mystique brotherhood/Freedom Force. Why do ppl think different ppl automatically want to drop part of their identity in exchange for acceptance. Im not singling u out its just so widespread and accepted that if they had a choice fat ppl would gladly rather stop being fat. It is one of a kind crisis and Cyclops is supposed to display his leadership. Maybe the way its done is gauche but it does what its supposed to do. At the time no one else could have handled the situation. Plenty of women have agency. It is an issue centered on the fallout of M Day so emotionally charged scenes are to be expected but plenty of men had similar scenes (you talk abt Wolverine/Colossus urself, how is it different then Nightcrawler/Kitty? Blob and QS (lol I thought this was magneto but i guess theyre plugging the son of m mini) were isolated while the X-Men have a solid support system which is the whole point of Scott and Emma's talk. I'm not objective bc i love Claremont but I can see where sum of the complaints on his writing come from: his dialogue, his storytelling, his unsavory fetishes and fetishization of women, non white characters, his erasure of mlms) but saying he dont write women independantly from men is such a reach. It is Sunspot who just joined the HFC with Sage. I like religious Kitty. Madrox is fuckin trash I hate PAD. He was so selfish. Didnt only the ppl protected by Strange keep memories of HoM? I never read HoM idc idc. I like the idea of some XMen hiding this from the rest I cant wait to see how it plays out. :/ Courtney Ross <3 Marvel r so cowardly for not bringing her back. Its refreshing to read Cyclops be Emma's emotional center instead of him being badass stoic and her being a cool cheerleading gf. CC is clowning on straight rights activists by having Iceman hook up with girls he has zero chemistry with. Remember when he was paired up with Sage in the End??? CC trying to salvage what he can of ororo's dignity. Im assuming the XMen have unstable molecules uniforms in a watch or sthg.
