I agree the hagiography is grating, but no matter how glowing the praise I still read it as perfunctory. It doesn't mean much to me. Even that orange shit-gibbon posted a nice tweet about Aretha Franklin when she died, and I doubt he's listened to a single Aretha song in his life. Is McCain's replacement up for re-election in 2020 or later? I've read conflicting things. Of course. It's not surprising. It's not deserved either. McCain has been treated as an above the fray politician since always simply because he fought in a war. Yet John Kerry was never afforded that special treatment (quite the opposite, in fact). I doubt Tammy Duckworth will get that treatment. Of course, this is partly because McCain was an attention whore who perfected playing the media long before Donald Trump did. The media worship of McCain was always extremely ridiculous and "Trump is mean to John" stories regularly got more attention than whatever life-ruining scheme the GOP was implementing on that particular day. And don't expect this perfunctory hagiography to happen with the Democratic losers of the 21st century (Gore, Kerry, Clinton). Their obituaries will mostly be pointing out how flawed and polarizing they were. McCain's replacement is up in 2020.

I wish we should stop arguing with russians and "destroy" netherlands, you deserve it for your co-operation with nazis. Consider the following: Every time, we want to change our system into an europan one, like Germany, or Netherlands, these countries scream that we are breaking the democracy. Netherlands is shit. I don't know why anyone would compare us. We have conscience, you have... what do you actually have? I would rather die than be a niderlander for sure

here's a current event: I've never evacuated fro a hurricane in my entire life and im not going to start now that im not even living in florida. LOL bitch evacuate for what???
I had to teach just an hour and a half hour of lab today because classes were canceled after a certain point because the kids are under a mandatory evacuation. And it sucks. I think people on the news think evacuations are easy, but the university is literally kicking them out for "safety" onto the street. Amtrack is cutting trains going south. Basically if your family can't afford to move you somewhere or you don't have a car youre screwed.
this is all to say im going to the beach tomorrow. florence can eat my entire ass.

A commercial for Brett Kavanaugh just came on my tv. Never in my life have I seen a commercial for a SCOTUS nominee. I've never even heard of such a thing.
It was a blonde woman talking about how she isn't a politician, just a mom, and she wants "trustworthy, empathetic people on the supreme court" and that's why she loves kavanaugh.
What a fucking sideshow

is anyone else watching the hearing today? I missed the beginning, came in at 11:30, so I saw the last part of Blasey Ford being questioned but missed her testimony. They're about to bring out Kavanaugh.
From what I saw, Blasey Ford is being very cautious about how she answers everything. Lotta hedging. Depending on your view it either comes off as thorough or waffling, which is how I imagine the right will treat it. She's had to serve as her own 'expert' here, and even though that's shitty I think the optics there were good. She clearly knows her shit about memory, ptsd, anxiety, and the brain.
The line of questioning in the last hour I saw from the GOP (delivered through the female prosecutor they hired to ask their questions for optics reasons) was insultingly ridiculous. They had her asking things like if there were other "environmental factors" that could have contributed to her ptsd, and why she claims to have a fear of flying but also flies to Hawaii for vacation and to DE to visit family. It felt petty, and like they didn't have anything substantive to mar her credibility.
I wonder what the Dems will ask Kavanaugh. I imagine his people have spent the past week coaching him so he won't come off as a smarmy pos on camera. I wonder how successful they were?

Her testimony was difficult to watch. I have zero doubts that she's telling the truth.

That was exhausting. And it's only half over
Don't know whether Chuck Grassley or Lindsey Graham is more odious

Bizarre that the GOP had its mouthpiece allude to the doppelganger conspiracy theory. I was actually surprised

Kavanaugh must be taking Trump's advice to be hotter on camera considering he is shouting into the microphone
