LEAVE JULIA ALONE, KAI.
Let's be fair, Kady's largely managed to avoid The Quentin Effect, all her problems come from elsewhere.

Oh, I tried, but I think every awful thing is just because of Reynard and/or ultimately goes back to the predicament she was in before she met Quentin. If you really want to stretch it, I guess (S3 spoilers) Losing a friend in Harriet (though I like to think she survived and will pop up again) can be traced to Quentin killing Ember (Umber?), but if we're going that many degrees out, a lot of the blame for a lot of dumbassery goes to Jane fucking with the time loops in the first place. Now I'm kind of curious what Kady's deal was in any previous loops. Did they say?

How is Quentin the noteworthy asshole in this group? If I may detail Quentin's crimes: 1. Is a fuckboy 2. Literally every other person on the show is worse off for having met him 3. Never, ever, EVER has to face consequences for his actions. Consequences are for everyone else to deal with. 4. Despite getting everything he's ever wanted, and dragging a bunch of people along with his bullshit, is still a sad sack. 5. Another example of that trope where the female characters are way better, but he still gets to be the chosen one/focal point of the story for reasons unknown. Though, {light spoiler for the general direction of later season} that becomes less the case later when other characters get more shine/importance to the story I dunno. 3-5 are because he's put in that position by the Chatwins, the Dean, and those on that tier. They go out of their way to get him into Breakbills, construct the time loop so he can keep failing (much to their chagrin), and the Beast knows to come looking for him because of them. They lament that he's unremarkable and less talented than his peers, but has a specific importance (that may merely amount to bringing all the others together, like the Arthur trope). He's the anti-Harry Potter/Lucy(?) in this anti-HP/Narnia story - I feel like when the story acknowledges this on more than one occasion, it makes it an intrinsic part of the story and not a bolted-on B-plot that gets in the way. Not sure he's a fuckboy, since he's pretty focused on/obsessed with Alice, and the one other time he's been sexual on-camera, it blew him up internally, blew up his relationship that he's constantly trying to fix, and he was drugged/drunk. The needle is going in the almost opposite direction. Anyway. Can't believe I went out of my way to defend this character like this, but here we are. Long Live Margo, the best one of them all.

It annoys me that the lovably evil and charismatic Martin Chatwick was disposed of almost immediately, but the one-dimensional sadistic rape monster Reynard is being kept around for so long despite doing nothing more than provide shock value.
Doesn't help that they built THE BEAST up for an entire season and gave him a backstory, while Reynard just made a surprise appearance at the tail end of season 1.
(of course for all I know Reynard dies next episode and Martin returns. He is in the poll after all while Reynard is not!)

Long Live Margo, the best one of them all. @kai I'd spoiler tag that, but I strongly agree on both counts. All the {Spoiler} gross things that sprang from the whole Raynard arc are without a doubt the show's biggest flaw Sorry to not respond to any of what you wrote Filthy, but I just remembered another shitty thing Quentin did. In fact, the thing that made me first decide he is a fuckboy. Back in S1 when he iced out Julia and threw his crush on her in her face. Gross. It was some Nice Guy bullshit and I haven't trusted him since. There's just a core selfishness to his relationships with everyone, especially Alice and Julia. {Major spoilers for S3} My favorite Quentin was S3 evil Quentin, because imo he was finally his most authentic self. Just reveling in his childhood Fillory fantasies, keeping Alice as a pet, and not caring about anyone. Even when Julia gave him her shade, his reaction wasn't freaking out, it was realizing what he'd done and matter-of-factly killing himself. Most selfless thing the character has ever done. 10 stars. I loved that episode so much it cured most of my dislike for Quentin because I felt like the show finally finally acknowledged what he is. These days I'm more mad at the writers for how S3 ended. You mean to tell me Q finally has to face A Big Consequence, finally has to put his ass on the line...but none of the other characters (who have all gone through WAY WORSE) can bear to let him do it, so they unleash unspeakable evil into the world?! Are you fucking kidding me??? That lady deserved a break. Quentin deserved to have to shoulder some of the burden. Julia deserved to be a God for a least longer than a day!
Nobody gave a damn when Elliot was going to be stuck in another dimension forever, or Margo lost an eye and was going to married off to a child of the corn, or when Kady was strung out, or when Penny was literally dead!

I convinced someone else to watch and they're live-texting me as they watch the last few eps of S1.
"Julia seems to be doing well right now. I'm guessing that doesn't stick?"
Boy, does it never.

Eh, it's fine - I don't particularly enjoy defending Quentin. But, I did forget about that - which I think was easy, since it was out of nowhere and then didn't have any kind of follow-up. I think my brain wrote it off as "the writers at the table that month changed their minds about this dumb idea" or something. I convinced someone else to watch and they're live-texting me as they watch the last few eps of S1. "Julia seems to be doing well right now. I'm guessing that doesn't stick?" Boy, does it never. Sometimes I wonder if she's the worst. The Reynard stuff muddies it up a bit, though.

I've discovered some people hated the Martin stuff in early S2, and I can't comprehend that.

The Beast was boring, transparent, and obvious af. I did appreciate the parallels between him and Julia. I liked that Reynard introduced all the divine stuff.

S1 Beast was a generic villain and nothing to write home about outside of the creepy moth imagery but it's the stuff with Julia and Marina and the singing and whatnot in S2 people were complaining about and that was some Good Shit, IMO. Hidden for Kai's sake because IDR how far in he is I also appreciate the fact that even though they gave him a sympathetic back-story and obviously had fun writing him they still went, "Nope, fucker needs to die," and didn't let him overstay his welcome or try to say poor baby's misunderstood or some shit like a lot of shows would do. I could and would have taken more of him but they clearly knew their own limits and wrote accordingly.
