I too loved The Magicians immediately. But I didn't love 12 Monkeys the movie. How is the series different?

Same basic premise to start but it diverges from the film real hard real fast in ways I can't explain without spoiling stuff. Brad Pitt's Jeffrey Goines is replaced with Emily Hampshire's Jennifer (who's different in more than just gender) and if you don't love her, I can't trust you, she is the actual Best.

IDK I loved it from jump. Everyone in this thread not already into 12 Monkeys, please get into 12 Monkeys. I didn't dislike it at jump, but the dumbass ratio or power levels might be at its highest. Dumbassery continues, but some of it levels off, and some other things happen that balance it out. |

I thought it had more to do with how mopey and such he is, which (from what I've experienced) tends to be what people complain about; however, while I don't find it the most entertaining, I find his struggle with depression, hope, and escapism maybe the one of the most endearing and grounding shticks in the lot. (Granted, I don't really know all the backstories yet.) |

The cheating I can forgive as a viewer because they were essentially on drugs (which, granted, they took willingly but also felt they had to), though I get (and enjoy) Alice not giving him a pass.
It's S2 when I feel he really shifts into asshole, if a well-meaning one. But he is still my son. My well-meaning asshole son. Bless his heart.

He's insufferable, and I didn't even remember that he cheated on Alice. I sooo wanted him to get his ass kicked but unfortunately {Spoiler}

If I may detail Quentin's crimes: 1. Is a fuckboy 2. Literally every other person on the show is worse off for having met him 3. Never, ever, EVER has to face consequences for his actions. Consequences are for everyone else to deal with. 4. Despite getting everything he's ever wanted, and dragging a bunch of people along with his bullshit, is still a sad sack. 5. Another example of that trope where the female characters are way better, but he still gets to be the chosen one/focal point of the story for reasons unknown. Though, {light spoiler for the general direction of later season}
that becomes less the case later when other characters get more shine/importance to the story |

They did try to subvert that trope at the end of season 1 when Quentin said he always wanted to be the chosen one, but that Alice is superior in every way and that she should drink the cum and kill the Beast.
