Polaris/Lorna Dane Thread (684 views)

By FilthyMutie's suggestion, I'm making a thread dedicated to Lorna! I'm not calling it appreciation thread because I think that gives a slant of "you gotta say only nice things about the character to talk here." First off, I'm making this thread in 2018, and Lorna was created in 1968. This year is the 50th anniversary of her creation. I've done a couple things so far to celebrate it, knowing Marvel doesn't have enough interest in or respect for Lorna to do anything for her on this milestone. One is I'm writing a fic: archiveofourown.org/works/13533726/chapters/31048233. My goal is one chapter per month, going through her character history chronologically. It's a mix of fanon and retelling/reimagining of canon. So far, I've written her birth, and her POV of the plane crash of her origin story. Secondly, I'm also commissioning art of Lorna. This is the first piece I've commissioned so far for this year. It was drawn by DecoySnake, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I'm in the queue for one artist, and another artist I've known for years is busy but will hopefully be available some time this year. I'm considering commissioning a one page minicomic but I need to have a solid idea and it needs to be affordable for my budget. That's all for now! This is a pretty positive first post, but since Lorna tends to get screwed over by Marvel, there's a good chance future posts will be more on the "complaining about things" side.

That X-Men Blue cover preview is not a great look for (XX-Men) comics in 2018.

Salarta should repost his analysis of that cover here.

I kinda worry about being too forceful here, but in that case, I shall post it here!
As a whole, Bunn is deeply disappointing to me. I mistakenly believed his writing of Magneto would translate into good writing for Lorna. Instead, he's become a liability not just to Lorna, but to Magneto and the relationship between the two characters as well. One-sided fandom of relationships kills potential for all involved. It's why I complained about Secret Wars: House of M treating Magneto and Pietro poorly even when those scenes made Lorna look good. It might make her look good, but it's not fair to fans of the other two, and it cheapens stories to where they become too shallow to generate interest.
I'm also anticipating, from solicits, that Lorna is going to get killed off. That Magneto's "big choice" (from solicit for #27, which somehow got reused as #29 too) is having to decide whether or not to kill her. I'm not saying that outcome is guaranteed by any means. But at this point I think Bunn has so little interest in and respect for Lorna as her own character that he'd happily kill her off and make her death all about Magneto's "manpain" at having to kill his daughter. Instead of being about Lorna herself and what the loss of her would actually mean.

Interesting turn of events today. I dropped X-Men Blue again after the awful page in #23 that was all about emphasizing her as Havok's magic pixie dream future/ex-girlfriend, in conjunction with all the other problems he exhibited prior to that page in past issues and comics. I haven't read the issue as a result. Need to wait for other people to post pages and panels. What I gather from people talking about it is that Malice killed Raksha or whatever they're called, followed by Lorna beating AU Malice within her mind. The broad strokes explanation I've read sounds good, and like Bunn finally decided to care enough about Lorna to give her an honest to god good moment with character development in her own right for once. But, I'm also used to people not seeing problems where they exist, and blowing me off when I call them out until it's too late. So we'll see what actual content shows me. What I can say pretty easy, though, is that it sounds like Bunn didn't really realize the potential of using Malice. Which is to be expected given where he decided to use it. He buried it in a storyline heavily focused on Havok and Mothervine and all that instead of making the issue/story actually about the Malice matters. In other news, I have the second Polaris anniversary commission out. This one'll even have a logo in the corner to highlight it's her anniversary (albeit currently not a really notable logo).

I saw pictures from Blue #24. I said a lot on Tumblr, but I'm gonna try to keep it short on here cause I'm tired and all that.
The pages were good, but as I said, Bunn failed to realize the full potential with Malice on account of burying what he did in a storyline devoted to Havok and Mothervine. He got the end point exactly right, but he didn't provide the narrative journey that should've happened in between. It's the equivalent of setting up a fight between Batman and Superman and it ends in one second cause Superman punches Batman's head off. The fun isn't who wins, it's what the characters do on the way to that outcome.
I also still don't trust Bunn. That cover for Blue up there is a huge warning, and him having Lorna say she and Havok haven't been together in a long time in #23 comes off like when Brevoort kept making excuses for why Lorna couldn't be Magneto's daughter. It read like he wants to force Lorna back into the role of Havok's girlfriend and he's trying to sell the idea that it'd be okay to do it.
Positive outlook though, despite being so abrupt, the pages in #24 were a positive step up for Bunn. It was the first time he showed actual interest in Lorna for her own potential, the first time he provided her with some character development, and the first time he provided something of real substance for her to do in a story.
I fully expect he's going to do something bad with her in the next issue he uses her in that I'll need to complain about, though.

Next chapter of my Polaris Chronicles fic is up. archiveofourown.org/works/13533726/chapters/32653245This one's fanon. It's a teenage Lorna watching the X-Men and Magneto fighting on TV, imagining herself as one of them and wondering why she can't be. It's largely inspired by the idea that Magneto having Lorna's memories of the plane crash removed/suppressed didn't just make her forget that, or forget she's a mutant, but set her up so she's unable to realize what she is no matter how close she comes to the realization. Also, I did a tense shift from past tense to present tense, which is normally a no-no in writing. Felt it worked better here anyway.

Commission #2 is now here, this time from boxofwant! It's a NSFW Tumblr account, but you'd have to have a Tumblr account and then deactivate safe mode for the account to see anything on it anyway. To be safe, if you wanna see the posts by the artist, I'll leave it to everyone here to do a Google search or whatnot. Alongside the normal version, I commission a NSFW version as well. That one can also be seen on the artist's Tumblr account.

In the latest edition of "Havok is amazing, screw Polaris" out of Marvel, here's the description of a collection they're putting out this November. They're releasing this a month after the 50th anniversary of her creation, and there's no mention of her in this description at all. Of course, they put Havok in there and make him the first thing they mention, but Lorna? Nope, nothing.

Do people here open to me continuing to make posts here like my previous post? I'm the only one saying anything, so I'm starting to think it might be preferred that I just stick to only posting about new fic chapters and commissions. There isn't really a fan community here for her specifically to make much discussion possible.

Polaris is being discussed. Pretty sure everyone on this board likes Polaris. All is well! Maybe we need more outspoken Polaris fans.

Two things: This crowd is not necessarily the 'appreciation thread' kind. Don't mean we're hostile to it, we all have our faves. We just don't have that tendency. And if u want to generate discussion, maybe try to spark interest in the character? This is not a criticism. I find ur latest post abt Marvel omitting to mention Lorna in a solicit for the TPB in which she made her 1st appearance inch resting. I juqt dont have much to say abt it, its Marvel being Marvel. Maybe talk/ask abt ppl favorite Lorna stories? Relationships? Looks?
Even then that don't guarantee a lot of discussion bc we're pretty small and burntout when it comes to comicbooks things, threads r created abt all kinds of content that don't get to two pages. Don't overthink it.

Maybe we need more outspoken Polaris fans. It's on-topic, I'm just a little more sensitive about whether or not I "go too far" for this board given it's closer and semi-private, compared to places like Tumblr and Twitter, or when I was on CBR. I'm not too concerned about if I become an annoyance on those more public places, but here, I wanna avoid it. Two things: This crowd is not necessarily the 'appreciation thread' kind. Don't mean we're hostile to it, we all have our faves. We just don't have that tendency. And if u want to generate discussion, maybe try to spark interest in the character? This is not a criticism. Don't overthink it. On the appreciation thread part, oh that's no problem at all. It's why I didn't add 'appreciation thread' to the subject! All characters have pros and cons, and people get different things from different characters. And yeah, the community smallness is a bit of my concern and why I haven't been trying to start up discussions on things about her very much. I feel like there probably aren't enough people here interested in talking specifically about Lorna's powers, costume, looks, etc. Maybe in context of other things like "let's talk about how the current X-Men books are going," but not by herself, which makes this thread feel kinda pointless to have until other Lorna fans show up. I'm saying all this just to try to be realistic, nothing bad meant by any of it.

Wrote the new fic chapter, titled Rebel. archiveofourown.org/works/13533726/chapters/33486453Using religious imagery and Jewish history and ancestry. We'll see how that's perceived. Premise is pretty much Lorna's introductory issues, mainly what happens in X-Men #50. I'm also gonna start using the #Polaris50 hashtag on Twitter for her 50th anniversary. Worst case scenario, it becomes an easy way for me to re-find everything I do for it.
